Sorry to see that you're having such difficulty, Latesha.
How long have you had tinnitus? When you say that the doctor says there's nothing to do, was that your regular doctor or an ENT? Also, did you have a hearing test? smn

GOD BLEES YOU ! LATESHA
Latesha, maybe the folks on this board can help you out a bit.
I'll start out by asking you a few questions ... Can you tell us what the circumstances were when you first became aware of your tinnitus? Is it in both ears or just in one ear? I know that you can hear your tinnitus any time you try to hear it, but as you go through your busy day, what percent of the time are you consciously aware of it when you are not trying to hear it? smn
Tinnitus can really drive you nuts, but eventually your brain will start to tune it out. I have a bad case of it, but it really does not bother me much anymore. It can take a while to get to that point; six months is still early
It sounds like you might not have health insurance. If you don't I'd suggest going back to the emergency room and asking for some anti-anxiety medication. Xanax has helped me and others and when you get the generic form it is not very expensive.
In most people it does nothing for the tinnitus itself, but it does take the edge off the huge emotional response - the panic and anxiety.
Over time you won't need the medication, but it can really help in the beginning so if you can talk to a doctor about it, that would be my suggestion to get you over this difficult time. But make sure you do discuss it with an MD who can ensure that it is OK for you.
You will feel better.

Latesha, I am so sorry to hear about your problem. Unfortunately, no x-ray of your head will help. Medical science knows very little about tinnitus, so it is not as though the doctors can take an x-ray, find what's wrong and then give you something to fix it. All of us here wish it were that easy.
Excess noise often causes tinnitus, so it is possible that your tinnitus resulted from all the noise you are exposed to at work. That is what happened to me. I suggest you wear earplugs at work to protect your ears. Earplugs might make the tinnitus seem louder because they block out surrounding noise, but continued exposure to loud noise is not healthy and can make your ear problems worse.
Latesha, I don't think you should
wear earplugs at work. I'll explain
when I return from vacation.
I realize that the place you work at is loud, but if you think back to when you got tinnitus- were you exposed to some other loud noise, or anything else you can think of that would have caused it? You mentioned you are taking some time off, Maybe taking a break from work for a bit will allow to relax and also try to develop some strategies for coping with your tinnitus. I know it is not easy, but it may help to remember that over time many with tinnitus are able to get to the point where it is not so disturbing to them anymore, and over time - they are able to tune it out- or quit focusing on it. (Or if and when they happen to notice it, not be as bothered by it.) Many find that using "sound enrichment" of some sort -(something that is pleasing to hear- and easy on the ears)- for background sounds, can help. Some use a "sound machine", specifically designed for that purpose (of providing gentle relaxing background sounds) - and those generally have several preset sounds that one can pick from. Others may find a nature cd played on low volume, can help- I think it really depends on the individual, as to what they find works and is soothing for them though. By the way- Dr. Nagler has a web site that I found helpful when I was looking for information- The link to that site can be found here- http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/stringplayer/vpost?id=2994798 Peace and Brighter days to you.
I also wanted to mention- Another website that has some really good information- can be found here- http://www.tinnitus.org/home/frame/THC1.htm The Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Centre: home of TRT And this board also has many very good threads and posts. Some posts, (actually many) by Rob (a different Rob than the one in Denver), Dustie, Rob in Denver, stringplayer, and others, are pretty insightful.
Latesha, is the noise at Waffle House so loud that you cannot be heard by a person standing next to you without raising your voice?
